Workshop

Design in Abstraction

- An all media workshop -

Learn to design abstract paintings in this three-day workshop with artist and designer, Russell Black. Through lecture, demonstration, and class participation, you will learn to express your creative ideas through the use of abstraction. This workshop will cover both representational and non-objective abstract painting types along with the elements and principles of design that can be applied to all forms of painting. This will be an "open" media workshop (watercolor, acrylics, oils, pastels, etc.).

Points that will be discussed:

  • The difference between a representational vs. non-objective abstract painting
  • The elements and principles of design
  • The creation of and use of design patterns
  • Symbolic abstraction as it relates to subject
  • Non-objective and pure design as it relates to expression vs. decoration

Your instructor, Russell Black, has worked with many fine artists throughout the years including Rex Brandt, Robert E. Wood, Tony Couch, and Frank Webb.

SUAG “Open Studio Day” at the Arrowhead Gallery

The SUAG will be holding an “Open Studio Day” in the Arrowhead Gallery every Wednesday from 11 AM to 3 PM.

Our “open studio” will consist of a group painting opportunity in the workshop rooms above the Arrowhead Gallery. Bring your paints and equipment to paint whatever you want in any medium you want. The idea is to have a fun day of painting with your friends and colleagues. All we ask is to have fun bring a lunch take a break and clean up after yourself. It's a great way to get to know your fellow artists, have a good honest critique of your work and get a painting-started or completed.

This is not a workshop or a class, but I am sure that you can get some helpful tips from your fellow artists.

The sessions are open to all members of the SUAG. The cost is only $5 per session. Friends and members of the public are invited, but they must become SUAG members to participate.

You do not have to sign up! Just show up, with all your equipment and start having fun.
